by Jon Brown, MERIDIAN, ID — Saturday’s Aaron’s Rent and Lease Ownership Night at ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway will be about one racer returning from adversity and others trying to extend their winning ways.
Nampa, Idaho’s Melissa Weaver, the reigning Street Stocks series champion at the quarter-mile oval, is scheduled to make her comeback after a devastating three-car pileup during a preliminary race on June 23.
Another Nampan, 20-year-old Dylan Caldwell, goes for his sixth consecutive main event victory in the speedway’s NAPA Late Models division.
Kuna, Idaho’s Casey Tillman goes in search of his fourth consecutive feature win in the Pepsi Sprintcars. He trails Boise’s Jamie Ransom by 14 points in the championship chase.
The Pit Stop Drive Thru Super Stocks will hit the historic oval for the first time since June 9 when Boise, Idaho’s Gale Carter came out on top after a long, exciting duel with fellow veteran Kim Bradford of Eagle, Idaho.
The speedway’s management crew has come up with a special, limited admission deal to show appreciation for the fans who show up early and support racers through the final stages of hot laps and throughout qualifying.
Regardless of how many fans are stuffed into the car, van or truck, any carload that parks in the main lot immediately north of the speedway will pay a flat fee of $20 for admission. The $2 parking fee still applies, and this offer is only good until the main lot is at capacity. The offer does not apply to the auxiliary lot on Franklin Road.
For those who miss out on that chance, admission is the usual: $10 for adults, $7.50 for military personnel with ID and senior citizens, $6 for children ages 7-11, and free for children 6 and younger. A family of two adults and up to four children ages 7-11 can see the races for $30.
Rebuilding her Chevrolet Camaro after a three-wide mishap in Turn 1 sent her into and on top of the crash barrier, Melissa Weaver returns to the Street Stocks action without missing a race. But she does find herself in third place in the season standings, falling behind her father, Marv, who took over the top spot, and archrival Chad Bess, another Nampa racer.
Melissa Weaver’s car was all but destroyed when she found herself on the outside of a three-wide charge to the corner in the Fast Dash on June 23. Her father was running low on the track, and Middleton, Idaho’s Rick Baldwin in the middle. With nowhere to go, Melissa Weaver drove high into Turn 1 into the wall. Her familiar black-and-pink No. 92 racecar came to rest on top of the wall after taking out a few billboards.
In other speedway news, Meridian, Idaho’s Shelby Stroebel still leads the ASA Member Track National Championship standings after running his winning streak to 12 consecutive main events — including all 10 for 2012 — in the ASA Modifieds.
