by Jon Brown, MERIDIAN, Idaho – Open-wheel racing fans get a special mid-week treat Wednesday at ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway.warf jackson wws

The Mtn. Dew Winged Sprintcars highlight the Cricket Dairy Days and Carnival show at Meridian’s oval with some of the top drivers from the ASA-affiliated Canadian-American Western Winged Sprintcar Series in the mix.

Other classes scheduled to run include the Domino’s Pizza Legends and the TEAM Mazda Subaru Mini Stocks.

The night also marks the opening race of the 2013 Tates Hornet 100 Series.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $7.50 for military personnel with ID and senior citizens, $6 for children ages 7-11, free for children 6 and younger. A family pass, good for two adults and up to four children ages 7-11, will cost $30.

The gates open at 4 p.m. with racing at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased and printed at the track’s website, www.meridianspeedway.com.

Meridian, Idaho sprintcar racer Bryan Warf returns to the Meridian pavement for the first time since winning the BOB FM Diamond Cup XV championship and a $1,000 bonus as the WWS Northwest Asphalt Sprintcar Speedweek top performer.

Warf leads the Mtn. Dew Winged Sprintcars standings by 20 points over fellow Meridian racer Mike Murgoitio. Another Meridian driver, Johnny Giesler, is third.

Warf also leads those two drivers in the WWS standings. That series hits the road for the Super Shoe at Stateline Speedway in Post Falls, Idaho on June 29.

It’s unclear if Middleton, Idaho’s Sierra Jackson will be able to race Wednesday at Meridian Speedway.

After generously donating her backup chassis to Quesnel, British Columbia competitor Ron Larson following his May 29 wreck in the Bob and Tom Naylor Memorial, Jackson found herself out of action when she got tangled up in a four-car accident on June 1 during the Diamond Cup.

A new frame has been ordered, but it’s not certain it would have arrived at Sierra Jackson Racing’s Middleton shop in time to get the 2012 WWS season champion on the track for Wednesday’s local show.

Meanwhile, tight points battles have materialized in the other three divisions that will be racing Wednesday.

Thomas Harrod of Nampa, Idaho, holds a six-point lead over Meridian’s Jess Ryska in the Tates Hornets, but the men will be on the track for a different breed of race with the 100-lapper looming. Typically, Hornets run features at a third of that distance.

In the Mini Stocks, points leader Jason Sanders of Caldwell, Idaho, looks for a way around the Hull family after losing the last two main events to, first, Larry Hull III and then Jonathan Hull.

Jonathan held off Sanders in Saturday’s feature and now sits 32 points behind the man who won the first three main events of the season and has finished no lower than second in the past six races dating to the 2012 finale in September.

In the Legends, reigning series champion Phyl Zubizareta of Boise, Idaho is out front again this year with a familiar foe — Kuna, Idaho’s Casey Tillman — chasing him down. Tillman is second in the standings, and a resurgent Zach Blume of Eagle, Idaho is third.
