by Jon Brown, MERIDIAN, Idaho – The College of Western Idaho Professional Truck Driving Street Stocks are running 100 laps on the quarter-mile paved oval Saturday at

CWITruckDriving_ProgramLogoASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway.

That’s 25 miles, but it’s going to take the stock car drivers all night to get there.

The CWI PTD Street Stock 10×10 will share billing with the LeeRoy Nelson Memorial 40 for the Pepsi Sprintcars.

“The 10×10 is a new format that we will be using,” speedway managing partner Adam Nelson said. “It’s never been used before.

“We still get 100 laps logged, but there is a break in the action every 10 laps.”

That’s where patience from a notoriously rambunctious bunch will be paramount.

Drivers may have to wait only 10 minutes before resuming their battle, or the gap between track time could be as long as 30 minutes if another division’s feature is being run.

Where racers like current points leader Melissa Weaver of Nampa, Idaho or her father, Marv, or reigning champion Chad Bess of Nampa or 2013 feature winner Rick Baldwin of Middleton, Idaho (third in points) or consistent contender Jeffrey Meads (second in points and also a Nampa resident) wind up on the starting gird from segment to segment is at the discretion of the race director.

“Some segments have a full field invert planned that will shake up the race,” Nelson said.

One of the races with which the Street Stocks must share the pavement is the LeeRoy Nelson 40, held in memory of a former track promoter who is the father of Adam Nelson, the current promoter.

The Pepsi Sprintcars, the wingless open-wheel class at Meridian, will be the showcase division for the Nelson 40 this year. Among the competitors is LeeRoy Nelson’s grandson, Colton, who races out of Meridian, Idaho.

Also in the mix is another teenager, Adrian, Ore.’s Tristen Spiers, and veterans such as points leader Tony Ackerland of Star, Idaho, who holds an eight-point lead over Nampa’s Rob Grice despite a messy finish the division’s last main event at the track.

Other divisions set to run Saturday include the Budweiser B Modifieds, the Coors Super Stocks, the TEAM Mazda Subaru Mini Stocks and the Thunder Dogs.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $7.50 for military personnel with ID and senior citizens, $6 for children ages 7-11, free for children 6 and younger. A family pass, good for two adults and up to four children ages 7-11, will cost $30.

The gates open at 4 p.m. with racing at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased and printed at the track’s website, www.meridianspeedway.com.
