by Jon Brown, MERIDIAN, Idaho – About midway through the season, several division leaders seem poised to get some separation from their pursuers.street 92

Of course, at unpredictable ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway, that could be easier said than done.

Three of the frontrunners in action Saturday night are on winning streaks, including Melissa Weaver, who has a commanding advantage in Saturday’s headlining series as the drivers gear up for another College of Western Idaho Professional Truck Driving Street Stocks 100-lap segment race.

The Nampa, Idaho racing ace will look to widen her series championship advantage over her father, Marv, when the Street Stocks take their second 100-lap spin of the season.

Like the first go-round, this marathon will be broken up into segments, but race officials haven’t decided on a format yet.

Also scheduled are the Pepsi Sprintcars, the Coors Super Stocks and the Budweiser B Modifieds.

In the CWI PTD Street Stocks 100-lap segment race held June 15, Melissa Weaver won six of the nine installments, including the final three encompassing four laps.

Melissa Weaver brings a 139-point lead over her father Marv. Middleton, Idaho’s Rick Baldwin is third with 506 points. Baldwin’s championship hopes took a hit when he slammed hard into the Turn 1 wall during at 30-lap feature on July 26.

While Weaver enjoys a wide lead in the Street Stocks, Rob Powers enters Saturday’s Coors Super Stocks action hoping to find a way to put more distance between him and Boise, Idaho’s Justin Ellis.

Ellis is coming off a record-breaking run on July 26. He erased Powers’ track qualifying record with a 14.085-second lap around the paved quarter-mile oval.

A Meridian driver, Powers rallied to win the 20-lap main event and stretch his series lead to a not-so-comfortable 14 points. Ellis had battled problems with his fuel cell cap during the feature, which was a factor in sending Powers to his fourth straight main event victory.

Randy Keckley of Boise looks to build his series lead in the Budweiser B Modifieds. He leads Payette, Idaho’s Josh Jackson by 45 points, but both drivers could face a new challenge from Mountain Home, Idaho’s Terry Lydell. The former Street Stocks racer announced this week on Facebook that he will be driving a B Modified owned by Kuna, Idaho’s Frank Wallace. Saturday’s racing will be Lydell’s season debut.

Star, Idaho’s Tony Ackerland goes in search of continued consistency in the Pepsi Sprintcars as wingless open-wheel veteran Rob Grice of Nampa chases him down.

Another round of Spectator Drags also are set, so fans can bring their rides and go head-to-head with one another for one lap around the paved quarter-mile oval.

Admission is $10 for adults, $7.50 for senior citizens and military personnel with ID and $6 for children ages 7-11. A family pass (good for two adults and up to four children ages 7-11) is $30.

As always, children 6 and younger get in free.

Tickets are available online at www.meridianspeedway.com, giving fans the opportunity to buy and print tickets from home and skip what is sure to be a long line at the spectator gate Saturday night.

Gates open at 4 p.m. with time trials at 5 p.m., and racing at 6:30 p.m.
