by Jon Brown, MERIDIAN, Idaho — Fans who work in emergency services and their families can get free admission to the races Saturday night at ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway.
Track management is showing its appreciation for people in those careers with Pit Stop Drive Thru EMS, Police, Fire and Corrections Officer Night at the quarter-mile paved oval. Folks in those services need only show their professional IDs at the gate to get in free of charge.
Saturday’s racing card includes twin 40-lap main events for the ASA Modifieds as well as features for the NAPA Late Models, the Pit Stop Drive Thru Super Stocks, the Pit Stop Drive Thru Mini Stocks and the Domino’s Pizza Legends.
Keeping with the theme of the night, there also will be a Redneck Fire Fighting Challenge.
The Modifieds division’s twin 40s will highlight the night. Reigning series champion Shelby Stroebel of Meridian, Idaho leads the standings again in 2012, holding an 80-point lead over Rus Ward, who races out of Boise, Idaho.
Dylan Caldwell of Nampa, Idaho returns to the track for the first time since winning the 37th running of the Bill Crow Memorial 50 on May 29. He comes back as the series leader in the NAPA Late Models. He’s 16 points ahead of Meridian’s Chris Fenton, who ran the Crow with a recently purchased racecar out of California.
The Pit Stop Super Stocks division also features a tight points chase with Nampa’s Dennis Brodigan 19 points in front of Boise’s Gale Carter.
Phyl Zubizareta enters the Domino’s Pizza Legends race as the series leader, and reigning series champion and track record-holder Ray Bolinger of Meridian is on top again in the Pit Stop Mini Stocks.
Admission is $10 for adults, $7.50 for military personnel with ID and senior citizens, and $6 for children ages 7-11. Children 6 and younger get in free.
A family pass, which gets two adults and up to four children ages 7-11 through the turnstile, is $30.
Racing begins at 5 p.m. with qualifying. Heat races start at 6:30 p.m.
