Six-cylinder open-wheelers return to Meridian Speedway on $2 bill night

MERIDIAN, Idaho — Don’t think for a second that just because they race vintage open-wheel cars from a classic era that the drivers who populate the SPI Transportation Super Sixes are out for a nostalgic Saturday night cruise this week at ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway.
Some of the most exciting racing can be seen when this racing tour hits the historic quarter-mile, which just happened to have made its name as an intense place for open-wheelers to compete.
The Super Sixes, formerly known as the Idaho Sprintcar and Roadster League (ISRL) are back in Meridian on Saturday for the touring series’ third stop of the season.
Also on tap Saturday are the ASA Modifieds for a 50-lap main event, the Pit Stop Drive Thru Super Stocks, the Project Filter Pro-4s and the Jr. Stingers.
The gates open at 4 p.m. with qualifying at 5 p.m. and racing at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $7.50 for senior citizens and military with ID and $6 for children ages 7-11. As always, children 6 and younger get in free. A family pass allowing the admission of two adults and up to four children ages 7-11 is available for $30.
Any fan coming to the ticket gate with a genuine $2 bill will get into the races for two bucks. Folks holding all other denominations will pay the regular price unless they buy their tickets online.
Tickets are available online at More information about the track and its schedule is available at the website or by calling (208) 888-2813 .
Jasen Skyberg of Boise, Idaho, and Kuna, Idaho’s Bob Bachman pull into the pits searching for their second wins of the year at Meridian, having split the first two appearances.
And the two drivers have been splitting the difference most of the season. In the tour’s April 23 debut at Meridian, Bachman picked up the win over the reigning series champion, who finished second.
Skyberg rebounded to win later in the year at Meridian, and he also picked up a victory June 23 at Rocky Mountain Raceways in West Valley City, Utah.
But in between those starts, Bachman was back in victory lane — and Skyberg grabbing runner-up — in a July 21 showdown at Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls.
Skyberg isn’t the only driver looking to make it a multiple-win season in Meridian Speedway features Saturday night.
ASA Modifieds champion (and 2012 series leader and ASA Member Track National Championship standings leader) Shelby Stroebel of Meridian, Idaho, takes a shot at making it a perfect dozen in main events this season. He hasn’t lost an ASA Modifieds feature in nearly a year (that’s 13 straight wins).
The rest of the competition will take another shot at stopping Stroebel on Saturday in the ASA Modifieds 50.
Meanwhile, 20-year-old Dylan Caldwell of Nampa, Idaho, looks to keep his dominance going in the NAPA Late Models class. Caldwell has won six of the past seven main events for the division at Meridian Speedway.
A third series leader, Jim Bailey of Middleton, Idaho, will try to hold off the 1-2 punch of the EMI Filtration Racing Team (Phil Dugan and Jordan Fitch, both of whom race out of Meridian) when the Project Filter Pro-4s hit the track for a feature race Saturday.
Hunter Gates of Boise, Idaho has a similarly daunting task in the Jr. Stingers division. He leads the points this year, but Meridian’s Riley Rogers is in hot pursuit. A two-time winner this season, Rogers looks to be coming on strong as the racing season melds into a new school year for the division open to ages 12-14.
Nampa’s Dennis Brodigan looks to widen his lead in the Pit Stop Super Stocks class as that division returns with the likes of veteran drivers Gale Carter of Boise and Kim Bradford of Eagle, Idaho, chasing the top spot.
