by Jon Brown, MERIDIAN, ID — There will be plenty of rubber laid down on the quarter-mile oval Saturday night at ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway.
The Pepsi 200 is on tap, giving fans 200 laps of main event racing throughout the night.
And one of those races will feature the top driver in the ASA Member Track National Championship standings.
Shelby Stroebel of Meridian, Idaho, goes in search of his 13th consecutive ASA Modifieds feature victory at his hometown track when the ASA Modifieds and B Modifieds get together for a 50-lap race.
Stroebel has won all 10 of his ASA Modifieds starts at Meridian in 2012. He suffered his first loss since mid-August in a B Modifieds race on July 4. The two classes run different racing setups, so Stroebel still has a perfect record in the ASA Modifieds.
He still holds a .3753-point lead over Lance Gatlin, who also is unbeaten in his Limited Late Model series at Lonesome Pine Raceway in Virginia.
In addition to the combined main for the ASA and B Modifieds on Saturday at Meridian, the Domino’s Pizza Legends will run 30 laps and the Jr. Stingers will steer through 20 circuits. The third round of the Tates Hornet 100 Series also will be staged.
In addition to the racing, officials from the Meridian Food Bank will be on hand to continue their push for support through donations of food or cash. Fans are urged to bring non-perishable food items to the track Saturday.
The third round of the Tates Hornet 100 Series will make up half of the 200 main-event laps slated for Saturday. Meridian, Idaho drivers Chuck Youngblood and Colton Nelson have split the first two victories in the series. Nelson leads the 100 series standings and also runs in front in the overall Hornet season points race.
Admission is $10 for adults, $7.50 for senior citizens and military personnel with ID and $6 for children ages 7-11. Children 6 and younger get in free always.
The gates open at 4 p.m. with qualifying at 5 p.m. and racing at 6:30 p.m.
