by Jon Brown, MERIDIAN, Idaho — The teachers will be getting the schooling Saturday night when the green flag drops on the inaugural Southern Idaho Teacher Feature at ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway.
The Teacher Feature takes teachers out of their classrooms and deposits them into the driver’s seats of borrowed Tates Hornets for a little racing driver’s education.
The Hornets will get a marathon workout when the regular drivers reclaim their race cars from the Teacher Feature to race in the Tates Hornets 100. It’ll be like a mini-Enduro, which always guarantees a ton of cars and a bushel of wrecks and otherwise mobile mayhem.
In addition to the big Hornets race, the ASA Modifieds will roll out for 80 laps of main event action.
Reigning track champion Shelby Stroebel of Nampa, Idaho, is at it again, leading the field by 14 points one race into the year. Another Nampa driver, Jentry Pisca, and Meridian, Idaho’s Rus Ward are chasing Stroebel, producing shades of last year’s championship chase.
Saturday, the Modifieds will run two 40-lap features.
Also racing Saturday are the Pit Stop Drive Thru Super Stocks, the Street Stocks and the Domino’s Pizza Legends.
The racetrack also will pay tribute to longtime fan and support Curt Green with the Mr. Green’s Scooter Races for children. Two age groups – 6 and younger and ages 7-12 – will race on the quarter-mile paved oval in separate heats.
Meet Brent Arte at the Turn 1 gate at 5:55 p.m. to get involved and for further instruction. Parents can join their children on the racing surface for the action. All children entered in the races must have a helmet and, of course, a scooter.
Admission for the night’s racing is $10 for adults, $7.50 for senior citizens and military personnel with ID, and $6 for children ages 7-11. Kids 6 years old and younger, as always, are admitted free.
A family pass is available for $30, allowing admittance of two adults and up to four children ages 7-11.
The gates open at 4 p.m. with time trials starting at 5 p.m. and racing at 6:30 p.m.
