by Jon Brown, MERIDIAN, Idaho – Several racers will chase the ultimate checkered flag Friday during Cricket Green Flag Championship Night at ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway.
This will be the final asphalt racing at the track this year.
A couple of the drivers already know what it’s like to win a title at the historic paved quarter-mile, and one is looking for his second season championship in as many weeks.
If Melissa Weaver is going to win her third consecutive Street Stock championship, she’ll have to find a way around fellow Nampa, Idaho driver Chad Bess. Bess gained a 22-point lead in the championship standings last week when he hopped in a loaner Chevy and won the feature race.
Bess had been experiencing transmission problems in his No. 67 Chevy Camaro, and was able to compete for points after Middleton, Idaho’s Rick Baldwin offered a ride in his No. 28 Camaro. Weaver, meanwhile, continues to battle back from a wreck that totaled her racecar and knocked her out of the championship lead a few months ago.
Bess finished 104 points behind Weaver in 2011 and was third two years earlier.
Kuna, Idaho’s Casey Tillman is another driver who has rallied from an early-season crash to stand atop his division’s standings.
The 20-year-old Tillman holds a 41-point lead over Boise, Idaho’s Jamie Ransom in the Pepsi Sprintcars. Ransom, 25, is driving the racecar that won the 2011 division championship with his brother, Joe, behind the wheel. Both are first-year drivers in the division.
Larry Hull III of Boise took a huge step toward claiming the Pit Stop Drive Thru Mini Stocks series championship with a win last Friday He was helped by the hard luck of two-time defending champion Ray Bolinger, who struggled after crashing in a preliminary race.
Hull can wrap up the title with a strong showing this Friday.
Meridian, Idaho’s Colton Nelson, a fourth-generation racer who also dabbles in the Mini Stocks, looks to nail down his second Tates Hornets-related championship of the season Friday.
Nelson, who clinched the Tates Hornets 100 Series championship on Sept. 2, owns a 131-point lead over Nampa’s Thomas Harrod in the season series. Harrod won the final installment of the five-race 100 series last week.
Middleton’s Jim Bailey has all but wrapped up the season championship in the Project Filter Pro-4s. The closest competitor who is scheduled to race Friday is reigning division champion Joe Barton, who sits in fourth place 193 points out of the lead.
Bailey finished third in the 2011 championship race, 98 points behind Barton. Bailey was fourth in 2010.
The other championship to be decided Friday comes in the Domino’s Pizza Legends division. Garden City, Idaho’s Phyl Zubizareta is 90 points clear of the field. He’s looking to win the title one year after finishing just 18 points behind Cameron Cotta.
The gates at Meridian Speedway open at 4 p.m., followed by qualifying at 5 p.m. and racing at 6:30 p.m.
Admission is $10 for adults, $7.50 for senior citizens and military personnel with ID, and $6 for children ages 7-11. As always, children 6 and younger get in free.
